Superbly imaginative and original, Sabriel introduces a new world, new characters and new monsters which will linger in your mind long after the book is finished. The Old Kingdom is beset by the Dead in various forms, and only Sabriel has the power - but not quite the experience - to send them back where they belong. Familiar elements like magic and prophecy are adapted in genuinely new ways, while the (human and non-human) protagonists are sufficiently fallible to put their eventual success in doubt.

message 1: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Read these last year and I agree they are an excellent read no matter how old you may be. Unfortunately, I ran into trouble with some parents as I recommended them to two year 9 boys(age 13). The parents felt it was contrary to church doctrine on the after life. The news spread like wildfire and they were constantly sought by all of year 9. I should imagine some of them were severely disappointed when they eventually managed to obtain a copy as they had been hoping for far more subversive material!!
