When your main character just got back from over a decade in hell, you know that he probably isn't going to be a particularly nice guy. Even by anti-hero standards, Stark is remarkably not nice, and parts of the book read like some hallucination based on a Grand Theft Auto. But it's a lot more fun than that description would suggest, partly because of the Kadrey's dry, dark sense of humor, and partly because of the side characters.
