Truly a great American novel, "All the Pretty Horses" is written with the simple ambition of telling a compelling, griping story with deep thought in its pages. John Grady and Lacy Rawlins, two friends set off to Mexico on horseback to work on a ranch, a few years after World War 2, a time of great change and transformation in America. The two friends seek a simpler way of life that’s full of hard work, open ranges, camp fires, and horses, a rewarding life that the changing world can’t offer. They soon met a boy with a bay horse, who may or may not be on the run, soon they find themselves in trouble and they face challages that will change them forever. What I like most about Cormac McCarthy’s writing is the way he describes the setting and sets up the scene, wethers it's storm clouds in the distance, the trails that twist and turn in the desert, haciendas, a wedding at gazebo in a Mexican village ,or a pack of dogs chasing a truck, McCarthy is one the best.
