I haven't finished reading the book yet (the book is very very THICK), but from what I've read so far, the storyteller travels a lot around Europe so it's a good idea to have a map of Europe nearby to grasp a better illustration of the story.
The story is filled with details of historical places in Europe, I couldn't wait to see 'The Historian' in the movie version.
