I only found Benjamin Black a couple of months ago and he's become one of my favorite crime writers. Like his first book, "Christine Falls," this novel is atmospheric, gritty, and almost painfully human, in an often witty and uniquely Irish way, of course.

Quirke is so well drawn, and in a such a subtle manner, that he'll surprise you just when you think you've really gotten to know him.

Plotting is also subtle and reveals itself as a tangled web where threads lead back home.

Realistic, heartfelt, darkly plausible, and poetic. A literary crime writer is Benjamin Black.
