Paula Fox is a superb writer. This novel is a perfect "sixties" work, and that's when it was written. The writing speaks perfectly to the characters, situations, and story design. It's a "dated read" in a sense, as the dialogue and focus is self-conscious in the way authors tended to deal with personal awareness during that time. Although Fox is right-on in terms of her insights and dialogues, a more modern author might have handled them differently. This, however, is a very worthwhile read as one should get to know and be very appreciative of Paula Fox--if she's a new author to the reader (as she was to me).
