Although I found Kay's Fionvar Tapestry series to be too much - nearly bombastic - this book (although also using some of those tricks that make you hyper-aware that you're reading a story) was thoroughly engrossing. Because it read more as an oral history and didn't feel forced like the fantasy that I read, it caught and held my attention. I even enjoyed the foreshadowing and repeated sly misdirections. And I loved the maturity of the main characters, and the understated love stories. Lastly, I loved the reality of the story, the kind of tale where there aren't really villains, just people caught in circumstances, conflicting loyalties, and the innevitable flow of history.
