At times, this was a bit of a wallow in whimsy. The saving grace was that, mercifully, there was little in the way of melodrama, with the hardships endured with stoicism. My mind still isn't entirely made up; some days after finishing I am still mulling over aspects of this book (Shirley, a good thing?), in the main because there are little hints and asides of which I remain unsure whether they are there to be deciphered. Similarly, this book was signposted by World Events, but ultimately I sense this novel has no true interest in historical resonance, and these references were probably little more than a crowbar to make a later plot device fit in the pages without seeming too clumsy, which is a bit naff. In conclusion, my mind was not blown, but certainly whirred.
