I slogged through this book because my room-mate, who never reads, asked me to read it. I figured if I read one of his books he'd read ten of mine. So far that didn't work. He now tells me that he didn't even make it halfway through this book, I understand why.
The author of this book forgets to give his characters goals or purposes. These are just two characters living their weird little lives for half a book. Then around halfway through you start figuring out that there's actually a villain. The characters still don't really care, and by this point it's weird if you still care. In then end I was just glad it was over.
The humor also didn't work for me. Fantasy humor tends to be the same joke over and over again. The main character has some fantastical life doing amazing things but he thinks it's suuuuuch a bore. Amazing things occur around him on a regular basis and his reaction is consistently anti-climactic. That's not funny. you might smile the first time the character wakes up and says, "hey I'm blue, that's nice", but that can't be the only joke in a novel. Good Lord!
I appreciate what this character did in having two characters who would probably end up being a couple in any other book not liking each other at all even at the end of the book. That was original.
