I wanted to love this book since it combines two of my favorite genres -- a retelling and African fiction -- and more so because it came highly recommended by a friend. I love the concept of taking Canterbury Tales and setting it on a bus ride across Nigeria, but I found the stories themselves less than engaging -- the characters just didn't come alive for me. Also, I'm not a fan of verse interludes in narrative and Kicking Tongues is full of them as many of the travelers' stories are told entirely in verse. I'm glad to have read this book, but it wasn't as good as I had hoped.
