Really fun book, lively action and great characters. Sort of like the Elsie Dinsmore character, Emmy tries VERY hard to be good. But with all of that, her real (vivid and happy and loving) character keeps peeping through. One other reason to love this book, Emmy has two parents who are present in her life. They are absent (traveling) for much of the novel, but are very near and dear to her heart. I tis difficult to say much about this one, for fear of giving away too much of the plot, but think of some of your favorite partly magic/partly mundane storybooks and you'll have an inkling of why I love this one so much.

By the way, the comparison to Elsie Dinsmore should not put anyone off. Emmy is not preachy or too good-for-her-own-good child. It is just that she tries so hard to do what she's being told by the nanny at first.... and then things start to happen.
