it was ok

I am lately reading some Jack Vance. It is a pleasure that there are great (or advertised as great) authors I've barely read. I caught some Jack Vance hype from an article in The New York Times, and I've picked up paperbacks at some recent library book sales.

This book (half of an Ace double, hence a novella) is very pulpy. It has some wild ideas and many of them are just tossed out in passing -- I see this as a precursor to the Delany, Gene Wolfe, Le Guin style of throwing the read into alienness without much explanation. Still, Vance's book is in the tough hero mode, and retains romantic trappings, plenty.
