Fifty Shades Darker (Fifty Shades, #2)
by E.L. James (Goodreads Author)
I really wish I could manually add a 6th star to Goodreads for this book. I never would have believed it was possible, but Fifty Shades Darker is even better than Fifty Shades of Grey. Hard to believe, but true. Reading this book reminded me of a quote that I love by Alan Cohen, “Scared and sacred are spelled with the same letters. Awful proceeds from the same root word as awesome. Terrify and terrific. Every negative experience holds the seed of transformation.” Reading Fifty Shades Darker is like witnessing metamorphosis in action.
What I love the most about this book is the way the events and characters change and develop. I love that Christian Grey transforms from utterly immovable to flexible. Every negative emotion he feels eventually becomes something positive, or at least something he can learn and grow from. He learns the delicate balance between give and take. He learns to open his heart and to accept love—and he learns to give it as well. Everything cold becomes warm, and everything hot—well that’s about the only thing that stays the same, still hot.
Ana and Christian are so contradictory and conflicting, and yet complement each other so well. Each trial, every obstacle, every hardship the two experiences are overcome and ultimately strengthen the relationship. This is truly one of the most amazing love stories I’ve read.
I would like to add one more thing regarding a popular misconception about this book. I’ve read a lot of comments from readers saying it is too far out of their comfort zone because of the BDSM elements. I would like to address this because I don’t think readers should shy away from it for that reason. EL James has a way of writing that brings out the heat in a love scene (I literally get butterflies sometimes while reading), but in my opinion she does it in a very tasteful way. I’ve read other BDSM novels and I think these books should really be classified as mild erotica, which contain some MILD elements of BDSM.
This story has a well defined plot with well developed, in depth characters. The romance is both sweet (I love the emails between the characters) and steamy, and to me the sex scenes do not feel gratuitous. It really is just an amazing and beautiful love story, and I think the BDSM elements are an integral element the plot in this novel.

“Hi," he says. I manage to grunt in response, and his smile broadens. "Rude enough for you?"
I nod and give him a reluctant grin. Jeez, any ruder and I'd have to spank the pair of us.”

wow that IS a beautiful review - very very well said :)I actually just saw the cover for book 3 on a blog today - i literally cannot wait. I saw a quote on that blog from someone named Jackie (sorry I don't know who it really is to give credit) that to me really addressed the BDSM element for those who have a problem with it:
“… these books weren’t really about that, they were about a seriously damaged man who undergoes a hugely painful jouney for love.”
Its very true, I love the way the author incorporated it into the story. Everything about it was beautifully done and very tasteful.
Anxiously awaiting Jan 19th - only a few days before my birthday - best. present. ever!! :)

Thanks Aestas. I am counting down for January now. I've been telling everyone about this book and I voted on it as best romance of 2011. I really think people who are afraid to read it because of the BDSM are missing out on a really beautiful story.
I couldn't agree more with your review. I never recommend books in this genre (even if I like them) to friends, but I would recommend this series.
When you say it that way, it's not so scary. When I came across the "red" room all kinds of warning bells were going off in my head...

But I can tell you it's not at all what you think--it's that cut and dry. I really hope you end up enjoying it.
Veronica~Nhaughty wrote: "As always, P.A., your reviews make me want to drop everything and go read the book!"Honestly, if there was ever a book or series of books worth dropping everything for--Fifty Shades is it. Have you read them yet?
Veronica~Nhaughty wrote: "Go ahead and spank me...no I haven't :("Veronica, it is Christian that you want doing the spanking, not P.A. Take my word for it. A must read!!!
Veronica~Nhaughty wrote: "Go ahead and spank me...no I haven't :("LOL I son't spank you, not reading them is punishment enough. You poor thing.
Veronica~Nhaughty wrote: "I'll bump it to the top of my 2012 reads!! Promise!"The good thing about waiting til January is the third in the trilogy is out in January so you won't have to wait. If you do read it let me know what you think.
I agree with this review. This is a love story sbout two people overcoming a horrific past to build a great love rather than a sado-masichistic tale. Our past creates who we become on so many levels. Kudos to Ms. James for tackling this project.
you are 100% right on with your review... I was told yo check out these books by a good friend, I thought I would give it a try and ended up obsessed.. couldn't shop reading, and when I HAD to put it down I missed it, wanted to hurry home to finish reading... I would love yo see these books become an HBO series.. although I dong tho.k anyone could live up to the Mr. grey I see in my head...
Great review! I just finished the second book and I loved seeing Christian's transformation! Ana & Christian are wonderful characters! Looking forward to book 3. Thanks for writing such great books EL James! ( my husband thanks you too- LOL)
Excellent insight P.A., I agree with you that far too many people focus on the ONE "titillating" aspect of these books rather than the true psychological nature of the dynamic between men and women. In EVERY relationship, love, friendship or otherwise, there is always Dominant/Submissive and most times it switches dependent on the situation. At the end of it all, the basis of these characters is love and genuine caring for each other, the sex stuff is the icing which covers the cake!
Me too! I wish I could rate it 6 stars also..,seriously I was way better then 5 stars..compared to other love stories, this one has everything and every aspect, I am very envious of the character Ana, I really wish I was her and christiand grey was real, I am sure other woman do too! LOL
Fantastic review for a fantastic book! I couldn't agree more. The characters feel very real and I, too, love the emails....very clever!
I totally agree! I think book 2 is better than one because of the character development. I agree that the sex scenes were not gross or distasteful and sometimes gave me warm fuzzies. Thank you for your review. U hope to enjoy book 3 as much!
