** spoiler alert ** I can't forgive the RW - probably the most heartbreaking scene I've ever had the displeasure to read (good thing I was expecting it too). To admit that this book still deserves five starts after that, means quite a lot for me. I don't think there was a single emotion in the whole spectrum I didn't experience while going through this. There's so much building up in the past books and everything sort of explodes in more ways than one in ASOS, particularly in part 2.

Also, I don't think I'd have been able to go through all this quite as poker-faced as I was, if it weren't for the previous books in the series. They certainly give you emotional baggage for all the usual fictional GRRM trolling going on (and the trolling is endless in ASOS). Everyone could have died in a Tyrion chapter (his chapters must be leading the death count, by far) and I wouldn't have been surprised (I'd be extremely pissed off if it was anyone in Bran's troupe, though).

The character development is sublime as well. That seems to be what I love the most about GRRM's writing. Especially The Hound, Jaime and Littlefinger.

So, so very well written!
