Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris

A fair warning: this review contains mild spoilers because writing my rant without them was next to impossible. Proceed at your own risk.

The Sookie Stackhouse series is dying a slow and painful death. Everybody knows it. Charlaine Harris knows it. She knew it even before she signed the deal for the last three books. What’s more, everyone who’s been following the series closely can pretty much tell when she stopped caring. What started off as entertaining and steaming hot (albeit poorly written), is now similar to a diseased and dehydrated animal, just waiting to be crushed by an oncoming car.

So now that we’re here, mourning, let’s make a list of Charlaine Harris’s sins, shall we?

• She wrote no less than ten books going in one direction, only to change course rapidly and unexpectedly in book eleven, thus disappointing countless fans all over the world.
• She created one of the hottest, most intriguing male characters in urban fantasy (and in general, ahem), and then she turned him into a monster I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. Oh my. No cookies for you, Charlaine.
• Every alpha male that ever showed up in the series was (and is) attracted to Sookie. While I may believe that she’s pretty and likable, I fail to see what makes her quite so special. The list is pretty long: Bill, Quinn, Alcide, Sam, Eric and many others, including her cousin and her great-uncle – barf. Also, once they fall in love with her, they never stop pining after her. Never. She ruins them for all other women.
• Harris’s overly simplistic writing didn’t bother me back when her books were actually entertaining, but now that her plots are getting weaker with each book, her writing weaknesses are also showing a lot more than before.
• She is prone to describing ridiculously meaningless details of her heroine’s everyday life. Case in point: Sookie spends exactly 10% of Deadlocked filling out IRS forms, and another 5% making sweet potato pie. I kid you not. At least now I have the recipe.
• Sam. It’s pretty clear by now that Sookie is going to end up with him. He is the guy who’d failed to notice that he was dating a homicidal maniac (she wasn’t as secretive as all that) until a completely random stranger warned him about it. In my opinion, Sam needs to grow a spine before he becomes a serious love interest, and I don’t see that happening.
• In one of her many interviews, Harris said that the bond between Sookie and Eric is her biggest regret. The way she chose to get rid of that bond was ridiculous at best.
• Faeries. I don’t think I need to elaborate. Everything went downhill when Sookie’s heritage was discovered. Her great-great-grandfather freaks her out, she describes him as both creepy and scary, she saw him no more than five times total, and yet she insists that she loves him. Because he’s beautiful. And a prince. Duh.
• Monkey sex and ice packs. Enough said.

This was my very first urban fantasy series. It’s what got me hooked to what later became my favorite genre in the world. That’s why watching it bleed to death right in front of me hurts like hell. It really should have ended with book 8. After that, it just went from bad to worse.

You are more than welcome to contribute to the list in comments. I’ll add some of your comments to the actual list, together with your name, if you want.

Dead Ever After? No, thank you! (Oh, who am I kidding? Of course I’ll read it.)

Tatiana I hope more details are coming. I want to revel in the train-wreckedness of it, vicariously.

Maja I probably shouldn't review it since my review would have t be very insulting, and I always try to avoid that if I can. She's going for Sam, btw, and she's turned Eric into a total bastard, completely unrecognizable.

Bonnie I am hating this. And myself for continuing to read.

Maja I have no idea what to read next to make myself feel better.

Bonnie Did you know that the next one is the last one in this series? She's finally putting me the series out of its misery.

Maja Book 7 or 8 should have been the last. I'd have been sad, but at least I wouldn't hate the entire thing like i do now.

Bonnie Yeah I know what you mean. It's not even boring it's PAINFUL.

message 8: by Steph (new)

Steph I stopped reading after book six because I hated it. The others were always cheesy and ridiculous but they weren't as annoying as book six for me. I keep considering picking them up again but from everyone's reviews it seems that would be a waste of time.

message 9: by Gloria (new)

Gloria Mundi Dun dun dun. It's the smackhouse again. I don't know if I can stop myself.

Galla I used to be excited for new books in this series, but I don't know if I can bring myself to spend $14.99 for an ebook version of this pain.

Annemarie Sam?! Surely not? Why write it if masses of people will hate it?! :(

message 12: by Kaz (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kaz I always thought Sam was The One for Sookie. Yay!!

message 13: by Steph (new)

Steph Sam was always a total "NICE GUY" to me. I always thought Eric would be the best for her.

message 14: by Madame X (new)

Madame X Having read Charlaine's other series, I've figured Sookie would end up with Sam almost from the beginning. But it pains me to see her screw up Sookie and Eric's moment in dumb ways that don't ring true to me.

The last couple of books have really disappointed me. Think I'll wait for a price drop/library, if unread this at all.

Regina Galla don't spend the money. Put yourself on your library's hold list, it isn't worth it.

Regina The thing for me, is I don't get pissed at who a heroine ends up if the author convinces me and if it is consistent with what has happened in the series thus far. Harris fails at both of those.

Barbara (VampAngel) Maja, I feel you.

message 18: by Dominika (new) - added it

Dominika makes me want to weep :(

Maja Honestly, people, don't bother. Unless you're OC like me and you really, REALLY have to finish what you started, save yourselves the trouble.
Or at least get it from the library.

Maja Regina wrote: "The thing for me, is I don't get pissed at who a heroine ends up if the author convinces me and if it is consistent with what has happened in the series thus far. Harris fails at both of those."

Plus, I really can't be into a guy who (view spoiler)[failed no notice that he was dating a homicidal maniac... and she wasn't exactly hiding it. (hide spoiler)]

Ive written my review but I'll wait until tomorrow to post it. It's a list, actually, of everything that went wrong with the series.

message 21: by Dominika (new) - added it

Dominika I have that thing too, when I have to finish what I started. But I feel as if I'm going to rape my memories of this book if I do end up reading it:(

Maja I understand what you mean. I felt tired to the bone when I finished it. It crushed me.

message 23: by Dominika (new) - added it

Dominika Blah, I meant the series, not the book. Anyway.. Eh. :( I feel so sad about what happened to this series, I want to take it all back and make her finish it before True Blood came out.

Maja I know. It totally ruined the entire series for me. I just can't look at it the same way anymore.

Trader Nice review. I'm almost finished with this and to be honest, this one has disappointed me the most. Right when CH has the opportunity to really wow us with a great ending to this series, we get IRS forms and every little minute of Sookie's life.

Bonnie Fabulous review. I agree COMPLETELY. Am so glad my library bought this so I didn't have to.

message 27: by Eric (new) - rated it 2 stars

Eric Couldn't have said it better myself...and I've still got one chapter left. This is awful, everything that has happened to this series is just to much.

Shannon You nailed it! I couldn't have written a better review so ty for doing it for me.

I almost just stopped reading completely when they had sex on the same bed, that oh btw she had always considered hers, and where not to long ago he had been snacking on WereWhore. This plot was so thin and the characters were written so stupidly that it was hard to root for anyone here. And I'm not even sure what I should have been rooting for!

And like you this was my first urban fantasy/paranormal romance series so to see it decline like this is just painful. This series should just be Dead and Done already.

Maja Eric, it's pretty painful, isn't it? Almost insulting...

There were some pretty disturbing details, and that bed was one of them, true.

message 30: by Cheekylele (new)

Cheekylele nice review .... perfect in its sincerity and honestly captures the Epic Fails that CH has committed with the whole fkn series ....

its a shame really but kinda understandable that HBO would jump in and start changing shit as soon as it hits TV coz really if they followed the storylines religiously it would be boring as hell to watch!

RIP Sookie

message 31: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I knew there was a reason I didn't buy this the other day - thanks for justifying my feelings!

message 32: by jo (new)

jo mo really surprised you still gave it those 2 (very) generous stars..

Maja Joe, I rarely give one star. If I manage to finish a book, it means it's worth at least something. I think I gave one star to a total of three books in my life.

Tatiana I just came across this

http://www.charlaineharris.com/bb/bb2...

Apparently, Harris thinks her latest books are alright.

Maja She's delusional. Dead Reckoning was absolutely terrible.

message 37: by Sally (new) - rated it 1 star

Sally Ford i can't read this review because i don't want to be spoiled. just tell me this, any Bill in there? and i don't mean occasional appearances. if there's plenty of him i might read this with more enthusiasm,i'm pretty down right now.

Maja Hmm, he's not there all the time, but he does show up occasionally, certainly more than in the last book, I'd say. There wasn't much of him at all in Dead Reckoning.

message 39: by jo (new)

jo mo what about eric? feel free to spoiler me!!

Maja (view spoiler)[Not that much of him either, and the little he's around, he's behaving like a total a-hole. He still hasn't turned down that queen he's supposed to marry, for example. (hide spoiler)]

message 41: by Lisa (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lisa Great review, Maja. This book was pretty awful. (view spoiler)[I hate how Harris had to destroy Eric's character to justify Sookie ending up with Sam. She could have easily used situation factors to break them up like Sookie growing old or wanting children and a more normal life. (hide spoiler)]

message 42: by Kurishiler (last edited May 28, 2012 05:49pm) (new) - rated it 1 star

Kurishiler I was going to give this book two stars but after reading this I realized I shouldn't give Harris a pass. The book was so bad I skipped parts! I wonder if I will keep reading this series?

WithaK Sigh. I spent the ENTIRE book waiting for the exciting plot twist that was gping to happen any second. Maybe after the next page! Then it was over and I found myself wondering what story I had just read. Did anything actually happen in the story? Kind of but not really. I felt the same way after the last one so I thought the plot would be set for this book. Maybe the next one? I still have hopes for the next one somehow... I never learn.

message 44: by Kasey (new)

Kasey Well said!

message 45: by Jodi (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jodi Dolbel I cant even begin to say how angry I am right now!!! Stuff Harris for messing up a great story!

message 46: by Mel (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mel I think she spent more of the story talking about babies than vampires... or stuff like "I ate taco bell in my car" really? Was that necessary? If anyone is actually interested the real action starts like 3 chapters from the end. Don't really have to read much more than that

message 47: by Alisa (new) - rated it 1 star

Alisa Calling her Vagina a "Yahoo Palace"... what type of sick bitch says that?.. so sad

Lynette Carson Now I don't feel bad cuz I wrote a bad review! I can see by the comments everyone has made that I wasn't the only one seeing it go downhill at book 8

Hilda Awesome review, Maja! I skimmed your review the last time because I want to avoid spoiler and now I reread it again. I loved this series but it turns out into something I don't recognize anymore. Eric has always been my favorite character, and I have no idea when he starts to change. Where's the dangerous vibe, the over-confidence aura? He is waiting for some wondrous magic thing to save himself. It's not something that my Eric would ever do, even in my wildest imagination. :(

I'm glad that the last book is the last in this series, but please oh be so kind to me: don't make Sookie end up with Sam! Sam is great, but... too plain for Sookie in my opinion. Oh, and Claude's betrayal actually surprised me. I had fragile hope that Claude somehow cares about Sookie. :/

Excuse me. I feel like crying for Eric again.

Maja Just like everything went downhill with Sookie when her fae family showed up, everything went downhill with Eric when his maker came. That's the last we saw the good old Eric. I can't believe what she did to him. I feel the same way, Hilda. Lucky for me, I still have Mircea from the Cassie Palmer series and of course, Curran.
