All the right things (for me): a lighthouse, an isolated island, stone cottages. PD James is such a great writer because she's not formulaic (okay, she's a little formulaic but someone has to die, there has to be a reason mired in the difficulties of human emotions and Adam Dalgliesh has to solve it) but aside from the necessary formula, PDJ plots different, interesting convolutions and she writes beautifully. Enjoyed Kate Miskin's greater role in this one but found the rock climbing bit really weak. I guess that's the problem of being familiar with something. I really couldn't believe Benton could lead a Very Severe climb, with an overhang crux, successfully having not climbed since he was 14. But that's a minor and rather unfair criticism; it does not affect the overall story one bit.
