Carlos Duarte is a makeup genius. Although still in high school, he just knows that he is destined to be a famous make-up artist. With the help of a friend, he lands a job at the make-up counter of a store. He learns a lesson about personal responsibility, has a run-in with his sister's abusive boyfriend and works with a TV star. While most of the loose ends are tied up at the end, the reader can speculate about what happens next.

Suitable for upper middle school through high school. The narrator is a very self-confident young man who happens to be gay. Carlos' voice comes through so strongly that the reader will feel like they know him and won't be able to help admiring his determination.
