really liked it
bookshelves: ages-9-to-12, classic, pre-2001, novel

It's hard to imagine, but this was my first time reading this children's classic about a man who is given a penguin. Soon one turns into 12, and he and his family are traveling the country with their show. Excellent for younger children who are advanced readers as well. The chapters are short and somewhat self-contained, keeping up interest. The biggest downfall of this story is probably the inevitable desire children will feel for a troop of penguins of their own.
