Loved the first one, which I have just re-read with great relish, but never read this one. I'm half-way through and it seems I now know why it is not also a primary school staple. It's a little disjointed, but I shall come back when I have finished it.

Customer reviews on the Amazon website were highly varied. I see Goodreads only averages it to three stars as well. Hmm.

Now that I have finished: pleased that I read it, but had very little magic in it for me, that is, except for this fun quote: "A famous sword-swallower from Afghanistan is now teaching me to eat my words (what you do is you take the S off the beginning of the sword and put it on the end before you swallow it)."
