This book has a terrific hook -- a man travels all the way across America with no money and no plans, hitchhiking, camping and getting free meals. This is a much more interesting adventure in pre-internet days; now with Couchsurfing, etc., it's pretty easy to do. I loved the suspense -- will someone pick him up? Will they be nice or weird or both? And this memoir is much more personal than McIntyre's "Wander Year" book; there's more at stake for him emotionally, so the travel is more meaningful.
