This picture storybook by Kevin Henkes is the 2005 Caldecott Award winner. It’s about a kitten who just loves to drink milk. This kitten wants milk so bad that it tries to lick the moon. Then, when she tries to lick the moon, she gets a bug on her tongue! Next, she tries to catch the moon and she ends up falling down the stairs. The entire book, Kitten tries to think of everything she can to reach the moon (or the bowl of milk as she sees it) but she only ends up hurt, scared, or more confused than before. This story is very humorous and children will love it. The illustrations are only in black and white but they go perfectly with the book, as they help to explain it. The “moon” image in the book is repeated in almost every picture, but it also looks like a bowl of milk. I love that because it makes you feel like you understand why the kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk. There is also a repeated line throughout the book where it says “Still, there was the little bowl of milk, still waiting” and I think that the children would love this because they could say it along with the teacher whenever it shows up in the book, which will keep the children engaged. I love this book and would definitely recommend it to younger children.
