This is a prequal, going back to Reacher's days in the army. He's tough and unimpressed by authority and the author makes it easy to imagine life in the small town, with an army base on its perimeter, giving life blood to that town.

Three women are murdered and all of them had dated someone important from the base, but none of the girls' families knew the guy's name? Come on! It was that which spoiled it for me. It just wasn't credible. If they really didn't know, surely flashing a few pictures of the main suspects would have resolved the issue.

Reacher was in civies for much of the book, doing his usual of buying a new shirt when he needed one. Couldn't get past the fact that he didn't buy new socks or underwear. Yuk!
