Sookie's vampire boyfriend, Bill, has become secretive and distant, and then disappears entirely. Eric's sure he's been kidnapped, and so Sookie goes to Mississippi to find him - even though it looks like he was going to leave her for his vampire ex. A gang of werewolves is causing problems but Sookie has the help of Alcide, a werewolf who owes Eric a favour, and the sexual tension simmers away. Actually, this third book has no sex scenes at all, what with Sookie's love life being so up-in-the-air and all. It certainly doesn't suffer for that lack, the adventure and mystery side of the novel being plenty engrossing.
I love Sookie, she has great "pluck" and I was glad she didn't forgive and forget at the end. Alcide was a great addition to the cast, and it's interesting to learn more about the vampiric society Harris has cooked up. An enjoyable read.
