Keynes: The Rise, Fall, and Return of the 20th Century's Most Influential Economist
by Peter Clarke
by Peter Clarke
Clarke's brief book about the British economist John Maynard Keynes has some interesting differences from other books I've read about Keynes. Clarke points out that Keynes was a more political animal than is commonly emphasized. For example, Keynes worked hard to provide the Liberal Party with a detailed platform to reduce unemployment in the elections of 1930. Keynes also seriously considered taking a parliamentary seat as a Liberal in 1940. Clarke also suggests that there are more connections between Keynes' work on probability and his economics than is generally recognized. One disadvantage of Clarke's book is that it leaves me somewhat more confused, because better informed, about what exactly Keynes said in the book he is most remembered for, his 1936 General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money.
