Judith Geary pulled me immediately back in time to the Roman Republic as it struggles to change into what will eventually become the Roman Empire. I had the sense that Geary had actually lived during same period herself, as the descriptions of the places, buildings, underworld and people seemed so real. It was a well plotted adventure and I was glad to have a chance to root again for Getorix, Lucius and Brosch. The political intrigue that she portrayed gave realistic legs to the kidnapping of Lucius, and I anxiously await the third novel to see how Geary handles the quest of Getorix to return to Gaul to honor his father by returning his father's brooch and reclaiming his Celtic heritage. I highly recommend this to young adults and all lover's of well-researched historical fiction.
