It may be a coincidence, however I picked this book up a few weeks ago, just as the Occupy Wall Street movement began. Set in the 1790s, just after Hamilton had established the national bank, the main characters are an ex-Revolutionary War spy and a woman who moves with her young veteran husband to the frontier after exchanging their war bonds for land. The story is thrilling and suspenseful, as well as thought-provoking as it covers events remarkably similar to today's issues: speculators attempting to control banks & markets, common people taken for more than they have by unscrupulous "business men", politicians catering to special interests and bitterly divided government, along with the 18th century issue of womens' lives and slavery. These central themes are the undercurrent of a story with elements of mystery, adventure, espionage, tragedy, as well as the "common man's" daily life during the 18th century. I really enjoyed this book as I love reading about life in that era and it had the added benefit of resonance with current events, provoking thoughts and questions about how we got to this point in our history....again.
