I really liked this book. Fairy-tale retellings are always fun, and this one managed to stick pretty close to the original fairy tale. Not to mention it was written before Disney's Beauty and the Beast, so it is completely unaffected by it--always a plus! (I don't have anything against Disney--in fact, I'm a Disney fan--and I love the movie, but they have a tendency to screw up fairy tales). It was kind of predictable, but in a very warm, old friend kind of way. I was a little annoyed by the tendency to ramble on about the background of characters right as you meet them, which muddled up the story a bit, but other than that I really liked it. I loved the added complication of Beauty having a minor inferiority complex. Very creative.
