When reading Safe Haven, you will find yourself in the middle of the life of a mysterious woman named Katie who has just dropped her old life to move to a small town, called Southport, in South Carolina. She isn't normal to the other residents of the town. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and all she seems to do is go to work then go home. She barely gets by and has only the bare necessities inside that little shack she calls home. Katie claims to have moved for a fresh start and she sticks to that story even when she is with her only real friends in town. She wants nothing to do with making close friends or anything similar to it because she is afraid of something in her past. Her goal of isolation becomes difficult for her at times because even moving to a far closed off section of town didn't stop her from gaining a curious neighbor. In fact, nothing can stop the questions that the townspeople have about her, and as her story continues, she finds herself unable to avoid them. Katie slowly unfolds her past to the people who have learned to care about her and to the readers of the novel. Although she has done her best to escape from her old life, the more pieces of her past she reveals, the closer to her new life it becomes. By uncovering her past, she thinks she is pushing away her new friends, but she is actually bringing them closer. Even when she tried to avoid this kind of connection with the town and its residents, Katie finds herself falling in love fast with no way to avoid it. She eventually learns to let go of her old life so she can create a better new one, but as the story continues, she will wonder if she has made a good choice. As a reader you will find yourself falling in love alongside Katie and hanging on every word. It kept me on the edge of my seat always wanting to know what happens next. I never wanted to put the book down and it was one of the best I've ever read. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to sit down and read a good book filled with action, mystery, and romance.
