Bess Crawford needs to learn that sometimes life is unfair and you can't always set it to rights by sheer determination. Bess, a nurse in WWI in England, is on her way home on leave when she sees the wife of one of her long time patients at the train station. The woman is crying and the other man is begin cold-hearted about it. He gets on the train and leaves her. The next day the woman is found dead in the river, having been first stabbed. Bess just has to find out who the man was that she was with and, if he didn't kill her, then who did. Naturally she finds herself in deep trouble. LIves are destroyed and Bess learns she sometimes has to just let people do what they want with their own lives even if it she does not agree with the decision.
