I loved this book as a kid. At least, I thought I did; but in retrospect my memories of it are of the movie, Miss Clavel saying "Something is not right!"

Revisiting it, though, the verse is awkward and sometimes forced, and the stanzas don't always seem to connect to each other. As a result the story doesn't flow very naturally. The illustrations are beautiful but so understated, and mostly in shades of yellow, that you have to look at them very carefully to see what's happening--not an easy approach with a kindergarten class. Madeline's character, too, is only sketched out in this book--we know she isn't afraid of much, but we don't see many or detailed examples of this. Also, the idea of having an appendix taken out, while a valuable concept to introduce, goes over the heads of most young children.

Still I love this book out of nostalgia. But maybe I liked the movie more because it created a fuller picture.
