I enjoyed this book, but too often the plot felt forced. The author inserted events which did not seem to flow from the parameters she established earlier. Giving characters various powers which they did not use, or were incompetent with, is very frustrating to the reader. I was also very distracted by waiting for Wendy to ask what happened to the baby she replaced. She never does, but the information is finally casually dropped on her. Hocking has a great idea, and a pretty good beginning. I will watch for the next in the series (in February), and hope that with experience she will give us a more polished book. Bottom line? Frustrating but worth reading.
