The idea behind this book is wonderful -- a dying man's thoughts, as he alternates between remembrances of his childhood and confused dementia. The first thing that jumps out is the beauty of the language. Yet, by the end of the book, this was exposed as it's greatest flaw as well. Too often in the book, the author spends pages beautifully describing scenery or a feeling, but often times without much purpose beyond the beauty of the writing itself. It was enjoyable at first, but by the end I was wondering why I was reading every overwrought word when much of it wasn't really adding anything to the story, and in fact wasn't making much of an impact at all; by the last few pages I was reading without bothering to internalize what I was reading because it was just all jumbling together.
