I found it very difficult to get into this book initially. But once Rachel is sent off to Molokai, it sucked me in. It was one of the most depressing stories I have ever read. It is just so sad to hear about all this death, anguish and unfortunate circumstances. The saddest parts are learning how human beings treat each other so cruelly. I hope by reading this book, we can learn from it and work on our humanity towards each other. Since I have never been to Hawaii- it was a very descriptive story about the islands and it really makes me want to go someday soon. I also learned a tremendous amount about the disease leprosy, as well as about the history of Hawaii during the timeframe of the novel. I would recommend to book to anyone who is interested in learning more about leprosy as well the Hawaiian islands.
