Mockingbird is about a ten-year-old girl, Caitlyn, with Asperger’s syndrome, a form of Autism. When her older brother, who always helped her to understand, is killed in a school shooting she doesn’t know how to deal with Devon’s death. Caitlyn goes to her trusty dictionary whenever she has a question about something or a word and she realizes one day that she needs closure for her brother’s unexpected death as well as many around her. Caitlyn tries to find a way to bring closure for herself, her father, and the community for the school shooting.

I didn’t know anything about Asperger’s syndrome before this book; I learned a lot. I liked how the book was told from Caitlyn’s point-of-view so you could understand her thoughts and feelings. This book also tackles the issue of what happens to a community when something as tragic as students and teachers being shot and killed happens in your community. I highly recommend this book.
