Frindle by Andrew Clements is about a young boy in fifth grade, Nick Allen, who has a reputation for being the class clown and sometimes a trouble maker. In third and fourth grade, he always had his classmates laughing and seemed to be able to trick his teachers into playing along with his mind games. However, Nick has a rude awakening when he moves on to the fifth grade. Mrs. Granger was the fifth grade english/language arts teacher who finally was able to put Nick in his place when he tried to waste class time by asking questions about the origins of the dictionary. However, Mrs. Granger had a reputation for her use of the dictionary. On page 8, the author notes, "Every language arts teacher in the world enjoys making kids use the dictionary...But Mrs. Granger didn't just enjoy the dictionary. She loved the dictionary-almost worshipped it." So when Nick tries to test his limits and invent his own word, Mrs. Granger is less than amused. Nick encourages the entire school to partake in using the word regulary, and after failed attempts by the principal and teacher to discipline students who use this word, the newly invented word spreads like wildfire. Nick Allen causes an uproar throughout his school, and his hometown of Westfield. Eventually, the news of this word spreads throughout several countries from all over the world. This story tells about how one little idea from one young student can have a huge impact on everyone. As a future teacher, I would use this story to encourage students to be creative, and not be afraid to be different. I would explain how such a simple idea can change the rest of your life if you are able to ignore the negative attention your idea may get and stay positive. I would also explain to students that while being creative and inventing your own ideas is a good thing, it is important to be respectful of others around you, especially your teacher.
