Take two of my favourite reads - George R.R. Martin and vampires - put them together and you get something pretty damn good. This story put an original twist on the vampire myths and teemed the practicalities of vampire life together with that of the riverboat men. There's some great concepts of good and evil, which at times left me agreeing with the arguments of the 'evil' Damon Julian over those of Abner Marsh and Joshua York; where surely we as humans have no right to condemn the actions of vampires who treat us the same as we treat our own cattle. Also I loved the true George R.R. Martin style where just because you like a character, doesn't mean they'll live, and some of the most hideous ones just won't die.
