I didn’t enjoy Getting Over Garrett Delaney by Abby McDonald as much as I had hoped to, but I did think it was cute. Unfortunately the first half of Getting Over Garrett Delaney sort of brought it down for me.

Let me tell you why – Garrett Delaney is a dick. I don’t usually say that in reviews, but he was a total and compete dick. And I totally realize the whole point was that Sadie needed to get over him. But I could not stand him and I could not stand her whenever she was around him or talking about him. Garrett Delaney is one of those guys who write poetry and hang out at cafes and only read critically acclaimed literature and only listen to 80s British music and watch black and white films with the tight pants and the glasses and blah blah blah blah I hate those guys. Not to say I don’t like b&w films because I love New Wave French films and British things and what not. BUT DUDE. Seriously.

THAT BEING SAID, I enjoyed the second half of Getting Over Garrett Delaney and was really rooting for Sadie to finally pull herself together. And also become less like him because she was basically a female version of Garrett Delaney at the beginning of the book and I was like NO SHUT UP. She needed to figure out who she was without him and I was impressed with her determination.

I really liked how Sadie’s mom tied into her process of getting over Garrett Delaney, because at the beginning of the book she really bothered me to (but then again, so did Sadie’s treatment of her). I think that really sort of helped to tie the story line together.

In the end, Getting Over Garrett Delaney was cute and funny at times, but also made me want to shove the characters out of a moving car during others. If you like contemps, give it a shot – I’d love to see what you guys think about it.
