Steve Jobs was a damn dirty hippie.

He didn't much like to shower or wear shoes. He believed his diet kept him from getting stinky, not true apparently. In fact he was quite odd and obsessive about his diets, he would go on kicks where he would eat nothing but carrots for long periods of time until he turned orange (maybe John Boehner is on this diet, no pretty sure it's Cheetos). This makes me wonder if these strange eating habits brought on his cancer. Who can say.

Steve Jobs was an asshat.

He was an ass to everyone, even Steve Wozniak, who by everyone's standards is one of the nicest guys there is. Wozniak was Job's only friend at times, and looked up to him always, but Jobs screwed him over time and again. Jobs didn't even claim his first born daughter (until much later) as his own even though there was no doubt she belonged to him. He also was a very emotional man, lots of crying and snot when he wanted something. Impossible to please, even down to the color of things. I seriously don't know how anything got finished, I really don't.

Steve Jobs was a super genius.

Despite of (or because of) all this he created the most amazing things. Because he asked for the impossible, he would get it. I love my Ipod and my Ipad. I'm very attached, I don't think I would like to live with out them now. I use the Ipod for my audiobook and podcast addiction. I'm even learning how to draw caricatures on the Ipad.....so frik'n cool.

Thank you Steve for being a damn dirty hippie, asshat super genius. Your creations have enhanced my life.

Petra X I always forgave him everything because of his genius until I heard that he never gave even 1c to charity. I stopped thinking Apple was cool then.

Really? After reading the book, I'm not surprised.

Thanks Kat! But I think I would have to pass on the job. There's not enough meditation in the world to get through a day on the job there!

Michael Hypnotoad He also enhanced the lives of all those Chinese folks who got up at 3AM to work 12 hour shifts manufacturing some glorified fuckin' phone or whatever...perhaps I'm just too cynical but I can easily imagine him being so fastidious over his diet but not so much over his corporate policies....

You will get no argument from me there Michael.

Cheryl Am about 150 pages into the book, and have had the same question--his diet and his illness. Connected?

I would not be surprised. "Everything in moderation" is a saying for a reason.

SubterraneanCatalyst ; I Will Always Read Your review cracked me up ..I wonder if he had ADHD LOL. Idk- a lot of the things you mention just ring ADHD to me. Eh- who knows perhaps he was just genius. Geniuses usually are quite eccentric for a reason.

With his lack of social skills, I think he was Aspergers more than likely. I worked with 3 people through the years that I am pretty positive had it. One thing is for certain, they were good at what they did but could be complete assholes. But, when you realize what's behind it....it becomes kind of funny.

I wonder if he was ever diagnosed with anything? I have had some friends with Aspergers that I really enjoyed spending time with but ..I have ADHD lol. They're fun to game with!

Oh they can be funny. They just say what they think, damn the consequences.

Jim Petra, this is not true. Steve Jobs had his own charity, the Steve Jobs Foundation and then quit the charity and his wife became a significant donor. Google search Bono and Laurene Jobs and you will see that Steve gave plenty. He just didn't want to be seen as a philanthropist.

Thanks Jim for pointing that out.

Nandakishore Varma Many geniuses were impossible to accept as human beings. You can idolise and respect them, but better not to be involved with them socially. :(

Abhishek Best part is his life reinstates the belief that being succesful is not about 'following the right path' but simply loving what you are doing... and maybe not giving a damn about others! I loved the book, Isaacson did an excellent job... nice review :P

Nando Rossi "...not giving a damn about others!..."

I hope people don't take that as life advice, really. You could say that overachievers often are selfish, but if you look at a guy like Richard Branson, who managed to be a billionaire and still gives back to society and cares about his employees, or Warren Buffet – or Bill Gates, for Chrissakes, who has given the greater part of his fortune to improving people's lives.

Jobs was who he was and that's great, he achieved amazing things and has so much we can look up to. But I believe if we all had his attitude about life, the world wouldn't last very long....

Abhishek Nando wrote: "..., or Warren Buffet – or Bill Gates, ..."

To each his own I guess. Even likes of Gates and Buffet have been arrogant in their lives, or else they each would have been nothing special! Maybe Jobs appears as the one with the least empathy, but he in fact loved and hated people with equal ferocity; his overtly passionate behaviour has at times made him look selfish, but that would be nothing short of judging a book by its cover. What we could learn from him is how much he cared about what he did... and how much he believed that he could make a difference with his work.

Pretty funny.

Abhishek Chris wrote: ""All reality has been completely suspend "-Bill gates page 237. Funniest quote ever."

I loved the one where Bill Gates made the reference about both he and Jobs living in the same neighbourhood with a rich guy called Xerox, and that he broke in to steal something but Jobs had already stolen it... this was in reference to GUI if I remember correctly! Respect for their rivalry...

Kamlesh Bhatt Very True ...

Nanci Svensson Genius (whatever that is) hardly should exempt you from behaving like a decent human being. I find both Job's anal personality & ruthlessness very tiresome and wish people would be held accountable for how they treat others even if they are successful and original. Plus I think it's probably the most viral opinion of our era that Apple products are user friendly. They are totally user incomprehensible. Walterson has done a phenomenal job with this bio, though, & I respect jobs uncharacteristic laissez-faire approach to Walterson's book.

Elisa Watanabe Petra X, he probably didn't give to charity because many celebrities use that as a tax write-off. Maybe he did donate, just anonymously.
