Judy Moody Goes to College (Book #8)

This book is another great part of the Judy Moody girl detective series. This book begins by focusing on the fact that Judy is very moody. Today, she is not in a good mood at all. She is actually in a very bad mood today. Her bad mood all comes from that fact that she is doing not so hot with her math class and homework. Judy doesn't want to get help from anyone for her math, but she ends up having to have help. Her teachers tells her that she has to get some help, so off they go to find moody Judy a tutor. When Judy finally goes to meet her tutor she is very surprised. Her tutor is an awesome and eccentric student at the local college. Judy is really excited and falls in love with her tutor. Throughout her tutoring, Judy begins to see what college is all about. She begins to fall in love with college and starts to realize that in order to go to college she has to pass all of math homework and tests. Before the reader knows it, Judy begins to get A's on all of her math work and is soon enough one of the best students, if not the best student in the entire class. Judy's mood changes drastically and she starts to work very hard to get good grades in all of her classes. This book is a transitional book that is used for children who are above reading level transitioning into novels. This book is very fun to read and I love that the focus is placed on education (a very rare idea in many short novels). It allows children to see how Judy changed her focus from fun to school and will motivate other children to do the same. Their are some images throughout the short novel, but they are all in black and white. Very cartoonish drawings of Judy and of other small objects. I love that on some pages there are small images of an eraser, or a blackboard, or a globe. Most of the images focus on things that are found in a classroom. I really enjoyed this book and I know that many children will fall in love with the Judy moody series. I chose to give this book four stars because although the story is fun, I think it is predictable and could use richer language to really challenge students. Overall this is a very fun book for children, and is a series that should be in school libraries everywhere.
