Valerie I have to admit that I stopped reading this when I read the preface and found a staunch denial of continental drift. I probably missed a very good book because of this, given how good The Silent Spring was. It's probably a mistake for the victors in a scientific controversy to refuse to read the works of the losers for that reason only. I should probably retry it, and just ignore the preface.

I'm finding quite a lot of interesting oceanographic information in rereading Kon-Tiki. I do find Heyerdahl's attitude more than a little annoying (why on EARTH would they attack a perfectly harmless whale shark, for example?). But I hadn't realized that some benthic fauna apparently surface at night. I wonder how they manage the pressure differences?
