Wake had a great story concept. It could have been an original mermaid story with a lot of depth. It was an inventive idea and I liked it. Cursed sirens needed to find a substitute girl to make their group of four again because they need to have four at all times. They pick Gemma because she is strong, beautiful, and a competitive swimmer. Of course there is a romance in there as well. It's YA. It almost has to have a romance. Well, it doesn't, but you will be hard-pressed to NOT find a romance in a YA book these days. Unfortunately, this book was pretty lousy. I'm just not going to sugar coat this review. I don't have it in me. The story concept was a good one, but the rest of this book tanked majorly with me. I was bored to tears.
The writing was awkward. REALLY awkward. The narration was odd. I felt almost the entire time like I was being told a story. The writing style was very detached and there was a lot of odd POV switching that left me feeling really confused. Was it deliberate or was the writing just THAT bad? The book was written in the the third person but we would enter both Gemma and her sister Harper's minds in the span of a couple paragraphs. No page break, no new chapter, just a really bizarre third person multiple POV that I still can't figure out. I think it was unintentional and I hope it will be straightened out before the final copy is released, but as a reader, you have to worry a little if the author doesn't know how to write and stay in one POV.
Most of the characters were pretty flat. I didn't mind the protagonist, Gemma, but the rest of the characters were cardboard cutouts. Her sister Harper was annoying and stifling and I wanted to throttle her throughout the entire book. Gemma was not helpless and I don't know why she never stood up to her sister. Harper was ridiculous and she continued to annoy me. I was an only child, and so I don't know what it's like to have a sister, but I can tell you that Harper's behavior would not fly with me. Ever. And then she kept calling her dad Brian, and that was really weird too. There was just a lot of weirdness in this book.
There was hardly any imagery and no sensory language. I had a hard time picturing the setting and the tone of the writing left me really bored and unconnected to the characters. In places the dialogue was very awkward, and then there was an issue of there not being ENOUGH dialogue. The author TOLD me the story throughout the entire book. And I hate that. I really, truly, hate it.
I haven't read a single mermaid story that has worked for me yet. The highest rating I have given a mermaid book is 3 stars, and unfortunately, this book will not be getting that high of a rating. I was really disappointed with this one, and I am left wondering if I should even bother reading any more of Ms. Hocking's books. Maybe her writing style just isn't for me. I need depth in my stories. This one stayed completely on the surface. Not recommended. Yes, it really was that bad.

24.0% | "This book is...not great. First of all, it's written in third person multiple and I am having a hard time figuring out if it's intentional or just bad writing. The story is okay but the writing is really distracting. Sad as I was really hoping to love this one." 4 comments |

As far as the story goes, I didn't have many issues. I thought it was a cool idea. My problems with the book were all technical. I just REALLY don't like her writing style at all. Too much narration. Weird POV switching. I thought the characters were flat. Just disappointing.

Admittedly, I haven't been enamored with anything Hocking has written so far either. I was hoping to be proven wrong with this one, but...yikes.
Yeah, if her writing hasn't improved by this point, I think this truly is her writing style. And I am not impressed. O_O
I whole heartedly agree with your review- especially the POVs! However, Hocking def has had some amazing stories in the past try reading Trylle series or My Blood Approves.
Thanks for this review. Re Ms Hocking's style of writing, I have tried in vain to get in to "My Blood Approves", a book I bought before getting the habit of always reading samples from new-to-me authors. Just could not do it.
It's okay. I liked those books when I read them, but admittedly they were one of the few books I reviewed on this site. My tastes have changed a lot since then.
Hi Kara! I totally agree with you...especially about Harper. My god i wanted to throttle her. Her obsession to be a mom was highly intolerable. And the third person POV was horrible. I can handle 3rd person but something was so off about this one. I feel like a traitor because i do like Amanda Hocking but this was just really bad. It takes a lot for a mermaid book to work. So far i've read 4 now and honestly i think "Of Poseidon" is the best there is. It was well written...and i find i can't wait for the second book. "Breathless" by Cole something i think...was also really good. So i know mermaid books can be done well but this one...definitely would make even a dreamer lose hope. Great review though!
Btw judging from our compared books it looks like we have similar taste in books....so i think you'll love the two i mentioned. They start off at a good Pace. You should download the samples to restore your faith in mermaid books :-)
Actually, I've been told to pas on Of Poseidon because of the themes present by reviewers I trust. I can tell you that Monstrous Beauty was pretty great though. So that is the one I would recommend. Thanks for commenting! :)
I might read it at some point, Scimone. It's just got really mixed reviews and I am wary because most of my friend didn't like it.
No your friends may be right. I think I put it on a pedestal cause most mermaid books are a lot like this...horrible. I would say read a sample of breathless by cole first . I think you'd prefer that one. I'm just curious of your opinion towards it. If you can't make it through the sample without thoughts of slitting your wrists then lol I think it's safe to say give up. Because this book definitely made me want to watch paint dry. And "of poseidon" i liked....but i think it would take rime for you to get hooked. Reading monstrous beauty sample now. So far so good :)
I will look into the other one you mentioned. Is it self-published? I have not heard about it before. Ooooh you are reading the Monstrous Beauty sample? Let me know what you think.
I can't remember actually. I only read it because it had so many great reviews....not that that always matters. But if it was self published she did really well. I'll let u know what I think of monstrous! I haven't even read the synopsis lol I just dived into it. Let me know if u ever read a sample of breathless.
Mmm I wonder about this book . . . it has mermaids I have never read mermaids-theme books but based on what your review said it not that good. I might not like it either but I will not make it on my top 10 to read list (how about that? Fair?) I have read this author's Trylle Series and LIKE it very much. Have you read that yet? I know she also has Hallowland (Is that right?) and My blood Approve but not in print yet.
I have not read the Trylle series yet but I have book one sitting here and I hope I can get to it soon, but I read her vampire series and I liked that pretty well.
Ooh good to know that her vampire series is good :) I just haven't jump on purchasing e-books although I do have a ipad but i'm still in love with print books
I appreciate your review and I agree with most of it. The only thing I disagreed with is that Harper was unrealistic.. I can see why she irritated you but I also connected with her a lot. I am the oldest child in a family of 5 and I am second mum to my younger siblings. I've never felt like I've had a choice.. There were just too many kids for my mum to deal with on her own so it falls to me. And I could relate to Harper because of that. And I thought her relationship with Daniel was more believable than Alex & Gemma's.
I do think her relationship with Daniel was more realistic. I don't think I said it wasn't but maybe I'm confused. I never said Harper was an unrealistic character. I just said that if I was Gemma, her behavior would not have been okay and I would have stood up to her. I never understood why Gemma didn't. I didn't like Harper. That doesn't mean I think she was unrealistic.
I think maybe you read that part of my review wrong. Or I am not understanding what you mean.
