I liked this early Edna O'Brien trilogy, though many thoughtful readers in my book discussion group did not.
Her dark view of Ireland, the stifling Irish Catholic childhood of the two protagonists, the poverty of the country people, the hypocrisy of the church, the skewed friendships, the cynical view of marriage and of men were all moving and believable to me. Her descriptive powers are marvelous, want to read more O'Brien.
