In a mechanical fairie world, young Will, who is part mortal, embarks on a quest to discover his destiny after a dragon makes him his interpreter and leaves a bit of his inky black soul inside Will's chest. This started out very promising, with an opener that reminded me of two of my favorite sci-fi/fantasy novels, Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve and Bloodtide by Melvin Burgess. But then the story vaulted into high fantasy until it almost reached surrealism, and there the author lost me. Even so, some of the best writing I've seen in awhile. Really gorgeous prose.
