I have a tradition of reading a banned book during Banned Book Week. This year’s pick was one of the first books burned by the Nazis – All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. Published in 1929, it was a literary sensation and gave voice to the hellish conditions of World War I as experienced by the soldiers on both sides of the trenches. A deceptively simple writing style that gives the perspective of an eighteen-year old makes it a fast read even if it is not an easy one. If you need a reminder of the power of books you only have to read the Author’s Note at the front of the book.
