Patton is one of my favorite stand-up comedians and I think that's still his best medium. Performing live to people with short attention spans forces him to cram big ideas and brilliance into short, well-crafted sentences that retain their punch. Giving him the freedom to write as much as he wants about whatever he wants has kind of given way to a bunch of mostly self-indulgent essays that leave you wondering, "That's great and all, but what's in this for ME." Barring a few essays where he breaks down geek culture, most of the person essays have nothing in them that you can personally identify with. Disappointing because again, I think Patton is a brilliant wordsmith on stage, but I'm realizing part of that brilliance is in the economy of his words.
