I'm writing this review incredibly late because it's been months since I first listened to Jay Leno's Leading With My Chin. It was for the Dewey 24-Hour Readathon that I first decided to listen to this book, since during the day of the readathon I had to go into the city for an author signing and wondered how I could read during the commute.
A relatively short book, Leading With My Chin was only about 3 hours or so out of my day to listen to. It was narrated by Jay Leno himself, which was a bit of a treat, as he told tales about how he started off in show business and, basically, what it was like growing up as a comedian. It was, surprisingly, an honest and heart-warming read.
I definitely laughed out loud numerous times while reading ... or, listening, I should say ... to this book, but it wasn't my favourite. I found that, while Jay Leno was a great narrator, he went a little fast at times, or mumbled at others that it was hard to understand what he was saying. Also, some of the stories were definitely funny, but others just kind of 'meh' for me and not much else.
If you're a fan of Jay Leno or of The Tonight Show, then you will enjoy this book. For me, my grandmother tendencies of going to bed at 9pm mean that I don't usually watch the late-night shows, but I was familiar with Leno's work. He is a really gifted comedian and it shows in this book. Actually, gifted doesn't even begin to say it -- Leno was a crazy, dedicated performer. I can't believe how many shows he would do to get where he is now. It's quite inspiring.
I loved the parts when he'd talk about his parents and growing up. It just shows that even some of the top-rated comedians and entertainers are still human, with human parents. It's nice to have something to help me understand the guy behind the TV show. It's always nice to hear the backstory of a performer.
While not my favourite listen, Leading With My Chin is great if you're looking for a bit of humour for the afternoon, or a quick audiobook in between serious reads.
