Despite the rave reviews of others that encouraged me to read this, I was ultimately quite disappointed. I was particularly distracted by the intricacy of medical detail peppered throughout the book- it felt like the author was saying "I know about this stuff so I'm going to tell you about it too..." The social, historical, and geographical contexts were generally new areas for me so that was good. But, the story was interesting without ever being captivating, and whilst the characters were fascinating, things never reached a point where I really cared about them. I know there are those out there who felt passionately that this was a book they just didn't want to finish- but it never grabbed my attention in this way at all.
