The Tale of Murasaki is not an easy read, but it is intensely satisfying and you will find yourself thinking of Murasaki's struggles when you're away from the book. Told in the style of a personal diary the book provides a fascinating glimpse into medieval Japanese high society and the background of The Tale of Genji author.

It is strongly recommended that you take thirty minutes to acquaint yourself with the basic overview of The Tale of Genji and its importance in Japanese literature before you read, otherwise you will probably find this book incredibly confusing and perhaps too alien to enjoy. If you're already familiar with Murasaki and Genji you will undoubtedly love this book.

My main criticism would be the many, many typos and spelling errors. I spotted them so frequently it did begin to distract me from the story and is the reason why I have rated the book three rather than four stars.
