I have tried to read other Auster books and not really liked them, but this one sounded good so I tried it. It is very short; you could read it in a day. And it's clever; all along you are given just austere sips of a mystery from the narrator, who knows the answer.
The terseness is fun, almost comedic. The answer to the mystery arrives softly, as though you knew it all along, but I didn't. Suffice it to say, this is the tragic version of Stranger than Fiction, and it would make a great play!
