The best way I can describe this book is "comforting." I like comforting. I have never lived in NYC, but if I ever do, I'd like to live on this street. It's an ensemble story about the intersecting lives of a group of neighbors (and, importantly, their dogs) on an otherwise unremarkable little street in Manhattan. Cathleen Schine has commented that, in the wake of 9/11, she wanted to write a sort of love letter to NYC...and this book feels every bit that love letter. As I moved through it, the book became a quiet, safe place that I could visit each time I sat down to read. While the reader won't go tearing through the pages to discover the next breathless plot development, I think there's great merit to a story that has a pleasant, rolling pace and civilized characters that the reader can take the time to get to know on intimate terms. Enjoy...
